Monthly Recap of May
Introducing Laura, Green Meadows’ new Community Engagement Officer!
Hello everyone! I am Laura the new Community Engagement Officer at Green Meadows. I thought it might be good to introduce myself! Let's start with my time before Green Meadows…
Before I took on this role of Community Engagement Officer, I started my role at Nottingham Energy Partnership (one of the organisations that runs Green Meadows), working full-time on the Healthy Housing Programme. This role is all about finding vulnerable people in Nottinghamshire and engaging with them if they find themselves in fuel poverty, aiming to offer support and advice. Now, my position has evolved to take on Community Engagement at the Green Meadows project as well.
This is my first job in the sustainability sector, which is something that I have been wanting to do since my studies in Sustainable Business at the University of Nottingham. I moved to Nottingham to study about 8 years ago….and then, I stayed! Which is funny because I never understood why people did that. But I guess I fell in love with this city. All the different communities that are so action driven, all the kindness and all the amazing people. All the willingness and drive to just "do it yourself". Because who else is going to?
I found this spirit in some of the people at my previous company too. I was working right next to the Meadows in NG2 for Vans (no, not the vehicle. The shoes) I was a Wholesale Account Coordinator for the German market. But what I really enjoyed while working there was my role as a volunteering coordinator. As part of the company's corporate social responsibility, we could go out and help the community. Painting fences, cooking for people in need, constructing pathways in community gardens… And it was my job to facilitate that which was amazing.
And I am so happy to be able to do that and more with Green Meadows. And to get to know all the people from around here that have done such great projects over the past years. Community Composting, the Growing Group, the Action Days - it's such a busy, thriving community and I hope I can contribute in an impactful way. Possibly by focussing on the Action Days and making them sustainable for the future beyond the project.
I am looking forward to meeting you all. Say hi when you see.me cycling around the meadows or stuffing my face with something in the park.
Other things to know about me:
I am from Berlin (born and raised). If I am in Berlin and I say I am from Berlin people always ask "but where are you *really* from” because most of the people living in the capital are actually not from there so it is sometimes hard to believe. It usually takes three "Berlins" and sometimes even the district I was born in to get through to them.
I volunteer at Brinsley Animal Rescue. We just had a gorgeous open day and sold lots of vegan cakes (some of the decorated by me).
I participated in the XR London protest in October 2018, and inspired by that event, I attended the XR Samba Band in Nottingham where I met our beloved Heather.
And so much more! But you will find that out soon enough when I get to know you as well - which I am really looking forward to. Until then, enjoy the sun!

Meet and Mulch! Edible Meadows is Back
Falling on the third Thursday of every month at 17:30-19:30, Edible Meadows unites Meadows residents who want to grow food locally, together.
In the past, we have plotted and planted food to grow around the Meadows and cooked up delicious food using fresh locally-grown ingredients!
Future sessions could include planning, planting, watering, sign making, harvesting, pickling, cooking, eating and sharing together.
In June:
Thursday 19 June, 5:30 PM -7:30 PM
We will meet in the precinct by the planters outside the shops and will be tending to our beds and soft fruit area. This is a great opportunity for new comers to see what we have already done and get involved!
Task may include planting out beans, mulching and heaping up potatoes.
Let us know you’re coming!
We ran a new set of External Wall Insulation Workshops!
To enhance the energy efficiency of our Climate Hub, we have installed external wall insulation (EWI). Seizing this as an opportunity for learning, we collaborated with contractors to run hands-on EWI workshops for Meadows residents. This is the first time we have ran this set of workshops so we were very excited to see how it panned out!
Participants were introduced to the principles and practices of EWI, as well as given the chance to apply the insulation themselves. This workshop was key in increasing participants’ understanding of EWI, demonstrating how it is installed and helping them assess whether it could be a beneficial upgrade for their own homes.
Check out the photos below to see how the EWI is progressing!
Interested in participating in a DIY workshop? We offer a wide range of sessions focused on home improvement projects like insulation and woodworking.
